Project Objective / overall Goal and Expected Results:
Overall goal: To enhance the food security of poor and EPVG households in six villages of Odogaon block in Nayagarh district of Odisha
Objective: Improvement of food security through System of Rice Intensification and System of Crop Intensification and development of better value chain of the farm produce
Result1: Improvement of Food Security and farm incomes of poor households through promotion of improved crop production techniques particularly SRI for Paddy in one project block.
Result2: Establishing a Community Managed Extension mechanism by setting up Farmer’s Field Schools and creation of a network of Community Resource Persons (SRI-Paddy) for handholding selected farmers on package of practices of SRI for better productivity.
Result3: Formation and Strengthening of producer groups for providing on-going support to the production cycle to participating farm households.
Major achievements till date:
The project is contributing towards improving food security of small and marginal farmers, who belong to poor and EPVG category. This is achieved through introduction of improved and sustainable methods of crop cultivation like System of Rice Intensification (SRI) and System of Crop Intensification (SCI). This project has contributed towards enhancement of food security by higher production and lower input costs of the crops like paddy and green gram. The emphasis of the project is on “more with less”.
Increased crop productivity is taken up sincerely to increase crop yields. The available data shows the productivity of Kharif Rice has increased 2-3 times by adopting SRI technique (System of Rice Intensification) despite of drought condition in the district. The productivity of pulses have increased 1-2 times from the current level of productivity, through attention on seed inputs, bio fertilizers and pesticides equipped with proper technical support. The development and progress has been tracked from the beginning of the project through efficient management of MIS.
Thecommunity extension mechanism has been strengthened through development of Community Resource Persons (CRPs) and establishment of Farmers Field School (FFS) and Front Line Demonstrations (FLDs). Eight CPRs have been selected and trained on various aspects of SCI to provide handholding support to the farmers as and when required. Four FFS have been established at strategic locations to provide onsite theoretical and practical training to the farmers
Care has been taken to improve the value chain of the farm produce through formation and strengthening of nine Producers’ group. The producers’ group in the long run will be equipped and strengthened all the activities for better production and collective marketing of their produce.

Significant learning till date:
Since agriculture is dependent on several climatic factors, risk mitigation strategies play a crucial role in successful implementation of the project.
Involvement of community members for the implementation and monitoring of deliverables is the crux for success of the project.
